Particularly old families. My family has produced quite a few talented magical folks, including at least one Saint (who I'm convinced was using some sort of magic). I'm not an active practitioner, but even I have more than a little talent for it.Curthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12907738913831106328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7294505416127496842.post-21984840192525895602011-05-04T14:49:58.123-05:002011-05-04T14:49:58.123-05:00@Morgan: That's how it works in Africa today a...@Morgan: That's how it works in Africa today as well, so it's not that surprising to hear. Most of the time over there if you have a family member accused of witchcraft you automatically come under suspicion yourself.Scott Stenwickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12389664381513219613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7294505416127496842.post-4594944409349408742011-05-04T00:55:50.213-05:002011-05-04T00:55:50.213-05:00The concept of witches running in families comes f...The concept of witches running in families comes from the Church. It has helped my skill in Magic, and Magic has helped me properly empathize and relate to folk. Nice deal, it's been. The fixating and symbol manipulation bits have been very useful...although it's easy to get caught up in minutia.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00688466441427496085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7294505416127496842.post-65418543632412314802011-05-03T14:50:21.162-05:002011-05-03T14:50:21.162-05:00The article doesn't even address the admittedl...The article doesn't even address the admittedly anecdotal observation that individual magicians tend to be better or worse at particular aspects of the art.

I do think that there are at most a handful of basic aptitudes that combine to produce differences in the ability to learn certain skills, but it would be amazing to run magicians with different sets of talents through a scanner and then see what their invidual brain morphologies have in common and where they differ.

I wouldn't find it surprising that a condition like Asperger Syndrome might help with certain kinds of magical work. Aspies make good computer programmers because they're good at manipulating symbols, and that's also an important ability to have when working formal ritual magick.Scott Stenwickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12389664381513219613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7294505416127496842.post-955451051609686972011-05-03T14:23:57.800-05:002011-05-03T14:23:57.800-05:00I'd be inclined to agree with your position on...I'd be inclined to agree with your position on the matter, and suggest that there's just as many biological and environmental influences, that go into any specific magic skill as anything else.

It's a lovely complex thing, and trying to flatten it to any one single component is just... silly, if not an indulgence in lazy thinking.

I've often tentatively suggested that being on the autistic spectrum has actually helped on the magical front, particularly chaos magic, and with some aspects of spirit work.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
