The Path of Initiation - Malkuth

Working with sephira Malkuth is the fifth step on the path of initiation into the mysteries of Western Esotericism. On the Kircher Tree of Life, the mystical aspects of all four elements correspond to this tenth sephira which represents the material world. The elements have both microcosmic (psychological) and macrocosmic (physical) components, and as with practical magick, aligning those components is the key to experiencing effective illumination and visionary work. Hence, I use the operant field in these rites just like I do for practical workings.

"Effective" is harder to define with rites of illumination than it is with practical magick. Practical magick is relatively simple to assess - you perform an operation with a specific objective, and then record whether it succeeds or fails. Effective visionary work should obtain information from the exterior world that you could not possible know by any other means, and effective illumination work should transform you in a positive way, increasing your degree of realization and in some real sense making you a "better person."

This process can be highly subjective, and failed initiatory operations often go unrecognized. I am of the opinion that a lot of the nonsense out there from certain allegedly "advanced" magical practitioners can be traced back to these sorts of initiatory failures, and this is a problem that has been acknowledged for a long time in the tradition. To avoid this, you always need to be skeptical about any apparent attainment.

Always test spirits. Always keep track of any changes you observe following illuminating and visionary experiences, and do your best to see if the changes you are seeing from your work are going in a positive direction. Stories of magicians "going insane" from failed operations are highly exaggerated - most often, nothing happens, and the danger lies in being convinced that something did happen and then acting from that perspective.

Today, I'll be focusing on Malkuth, the Kingdom. Malkuth corresponds to all four elements operating in a balanced configuration. So we find all four states of matter, all four classical powers, and all three systems of my psychological model plus the physical body working together. Balance of these forces within your life is vital to walking the path of operant magick. My system is not a classical Gnostic escape from matter, but rather a skillful means by which the material and spiritual worlds can be turned to your advantage.


The method of separating each element and then binding all four together is called solve et coagula in the Western Esoteric Tradition - dissolution and recombination. You start with all the elements bound together in a configuration that represents your mundane personality. Then, by performing the path of initiation elemental rites, you separate out and work with each element on its own to strengthen and purify it. Finally, you bind these strengthened and purified elements together to create a new, more magically empowered personality. It usually retains the basic characteristics that it had when you started out, but the magical process makes them all better. So solve et coagula is about evolving into your best possible self.

An effective magician should be able to operate from this perspective. It doesn't mean you necessarily will be rich, or totally healthy, or be lucky at love. But what it does mean is that you should be able to handle your shit, to quote Jason Miller. That's really the best way of putting it that I've ever heard. If you're poor because you're unwilling to work a job, and want magick to get you money instead, I wish you all the luck in the world but that probably won't help you. Magick is about probabilities, and most people are born into this life in such circumstances that they need some sort of job to survive. I'm no exception - but I have used my magick extensively over the years to obtain high-paying jobs doing things I like, such as programming computers and developing software.

That's how you need to do it. Especially when you're starting out, super-miraculous probability shifts are rare. As you go through working with the elements, planets, and signs you do get better, but for example, the probability of getting a decent-paying job is much higher than the odds of just finding money on the street. In my experience, starting businesses doesn't work unless you have a very particular set of skills, writing books or doing art doesn't work unless you're crazy-luckier than me casting at full power, and the only other option besides stuff like that is to live off of other people. There may be some circumstance in which that is somehow reasonable, but in my opinion it should be treated as a last resort.

As a point - by "work" in the context of art or writing or business, I don't mean that you can't use magick to say, get a book published. Or make a business deal. Or get a piece of art noticed. All of those are definitely things magick can help with. What I mean is that unless your idea of a decent life is abject poverty, you probably are not going to be able to use magick to make a living in those fields. As a writer I can tell you - getting a book published is not that hard from a probability standpoint. But these days, selling more than, say, 5000 copies of a book is very hard. You need to sell more than that to hit even minimum wage, and your book has to keep selling. Most don't.

The same is true of health. You need to be able to handle your shit. A lot of us have chronic illnesses. I have asthma and allergies, which are not fun, and so far I haven't come up with any sort of a permanent magical cure. But the point is that I take care of it and don't let it get in the way of my practices. Sometimes when I get sick I have trouble vibrating, but I still will do my daily practices "astrally" - that is, I will sit down in a simple asana like god-posture (sitting upright in a chair) and visualize myself going through all the motions and actions of my daily rituals. The point is that I keep up the work, and make necessary adjustments for my health.

Relationships are another big potential pitfall. There are all sorts of pieces of advice that may or may not apply to your situation, but once more, you need to handle your shit. And preferably, you'll seek out a partner who will let you do that. In my experience over the years, I will say that relationships between practitioners and non-practitioners often don't work out. It's hard to do serious magical work when you're involved with somebody who doesn't really understand why you do it at all or how important it needs to be in order to make real progress. Abusive relationships are flat-out awful, and I want to be clear that in no way do I blame anyone who finds themselves in such situations. They can creep up on you. All I will say is that such relationships make magical progress difficult if not impossible, and usually need to end.

That sounds like a lot, and I suppose it is. But all of these things should be worked with during the appropriate elemental operations so that by the time you get here, the elements are ready to recombine and in doing so improve every aspect of your life. And keep in mind that at this point we're still just talking about Malkuth, the physical world. But it is vitally important, because this is truly the foundation of the work. We're not trying to escape the physical, we're trying to transform the physical into a proper vehicle for the manifestion of our individual wills.

Because it involves the balance of all four elements, Malkuth operations use a new ritual that we haven't previously discussed. This is the so-called "Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram." This is another case where the Golden Dawn nomenclature is misleading at best. The "Supreme Pentagram" is just a Greater Ritual of the Pentagram for all four elements. In my system there are two forms of this ritual, microcosmic and macrocosmic. The microcosmic form is the one that most magicians mean when they talk about this rite. It is performed by tracing the Invoking Pentagram of Air to the East, the Invoking Pentagram of Fire to the South, the Invoking Pentagram of Water to the West, and the Invoking Pentagram of Earth to the North.

The macrocosmic form still uses pentagrams, but it uses the zodiacal order of the elements like the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram. So you trace the Invoking Pentagram of Fire to the East, the Invoking Pentagram of Earth to the South, the Invoking Pentagram of Air to the West, and the Invoking Pentagram of Water to the North. You should start with the microcosmic version, but once you have mastered that you should move on to the macrocosmic version. You do it that way because first you want to stabilize your own mind, and only then do you want to extend that balance into the physical world. The operations for both these forms are exactly the same, with the only difference being this particular ritual.

As far as the nomenclature goes, calling the general rituals "lesser," the specific rituals "greater," and this sephirothic ritual "supreme" is just silly. There is no hierarchy between them, except in the context of casting order. And there really is no difference between "greater" and "supreme" in that sense, because one replaces the other depending on how you're working.

In Liber 777, Malkuth corresponds to "The Vision of the Holy Guardian Angel or of Adonai." These operations are not the same as Holy Guardian Angel invocations such as Liber Samekh or the Abramelin working. Still, Holy Guardian Angel contact is a good practical intent for this rite. The Archangel Sandalphon should be able to give you some information about your Holy Guardian Angel, such as pointers for making contact that are specific to your individual will.

Whether you're taking up practical magick right away or pursuing the initiatory path right away, my basic recommendations are pretty much the same. First, take up a daily magical practice, which I discuss here and here. Meditation is important as well, especially for any form of mystical work.

In at least one of those older articles I talk about keeping meditation and ceremonial work separate. That's a precaution that I no longer think is necessary. Instead, you can do a single practice session that includes both. Go through your entire ceremonial practice sequence, sit and meditate for about twenty minutes, and then seal your practice with a concluding Qabalistic Cross. It works just fine that way. The whole thing will take you maybe half an hour a day, not even as long as watching a regular television program.

And let me caution you about extending your practice - and particularly your meditation - much beyond that. Pushing yourself to meditate for hours a day will probably not make your progress much faster, and I find that students who try to do this against my advice inevitably burn out and quit practicing. Persistence and determination should be your watchwords here. Spending half an hour on this, every day, will prove much more beneficial than spending three or four hours on one day and then being too tired to do anything else for the rest of the week.

Keep a magical journal, especially at the beginning of your studies. Note your state of mind along with the date and time you start your practice each day, and note anything unusual that comes up while you are doing the work. You can also write down anything noteworthy that happened during the day. It doesn't have to be especially detailed, but you want to have enough information to track your progress along with the astrological landscape and an overview of what is happening in your life from day to day.

And I realize this may sound like a lot - but it really isn't. Add fifteen minutes of journaling to your half-hour practice, and it really only takes about as much time as watching a regular television episode. In fact, you don't want your magical work to consume your life. That can create all sorts of problems, from lack of attention to your material situation and physical health to complete burnout. Even if you love doing the work, try to discipline yourself to under an hour a day, total. You can avoid a whole lot of headaches that way.

The initiatory path of illumination for each element involves two basic operations - a "Rite of Approach" and an "Elixir Rite." The Rite of Approach opens a portal into the elemental realm, and then employs the same methods I lay out in my simple pathworking ritual to explore what lies beyond the portal and interact with the Archangel of Malkuth, Sandalphon. The primary function of this to develop a working relationship with the Archangel and other spirits of the Malkuth domain. When interacting with the Archangel, feel free to ask for initiation corresponding to the sephira.

You should recognize the core of the Elixir Rite right away, as it is similar to what we do during the Aries Elixir Rite. The Elixir Rite is a eucharistic ritual that involves the charging of wine (or juice, if you can't drink alcohol) with the power of the sephira and then consuming it. This may or may not include a specific statement of intent. The function of the eucharist is to spiritually charge a material substance and then consume it, in order to take into your physical body the essence of magick itself.

The opening for the initiatory rites of Malkuth is the same as for my previous elemental work rites. You don't necessarily need to create the sigil of the Archangel, but if you do you can go ahead and trace it on the lunar kamea. The reason is that for the Rite of Approach, we will be seeking out the Archangel in his own realm, and for the Elixir Rite he is being called upon to assist in the creation of the Elixir, not to fully manifest within the Table of Art. Note that as with the Elemental Kings, I say "he" in my text but angels can take any form they want, male or female.

0. The Temple

There are a number of different ways to arrange the temple for an operation such as this. What we do is place an altar in the center with the banishing dagger and invoking wand. Also on the altar is a containment structure such as the Sigillum Dei Aemeth or the Trithemian Table of Art. The diagram depicting the character and sigil should be placed within this structure. A small container of some sort for offerings may also be placed on the Table of Art. For the Elixir Rite, the cup goes within the Table of Art and no other container for offerings is required (since some of the Elixir is given as the offering).

If you employ scrying in your work, an appropriate device such as a crystal or mirror should also be placed in the containment structure. If you are using incense for such an operation, the traditional method is to place the incense burner between the scryer and the mirror or crystal. Otherwise, it may be placed anywhere in the space. Some scryers like to place a taper candle on either side of the device, and while I can't say that method does anything at all for me, a number of others report good results with it.

Malkuth operations do not make use of planetary hours in any meaningful sense, as the planets and elements do not precisely correspond to each other. However, you can improve your results by employing simple electional timing. This is especially relevant to elemental operations, as the elements all share a strong affinity for the Moon.

1. Opening

Light incense, if used (Dittany of Crete). Open the magical field using the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram and Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram, Star Ruby and Star Sapphire, or the Field Ritual. The usual field for practical work is the operant field, with banishing pentagrams and invoking hexagrams.

2. Preliminary Invocation

Raise energy using the Middle Pillar, Elevenfold Seal (the "First Gesture" from Liber V vel Reguli), or some other appropriate ritual method as you may know how to do.

Make the Sign of Apophis and Typhon, raising both arms and holding them straight with an angle between them of 60 degrees, and proclaim, very strongly:

Thee I invoke, who art Universe!
Thee I invoke, who art in Nature formed!
Thee I invoke, the vast and the mighty!
Source of Darkness, Source of Light.

Then make the Sign of Silence, by standing straight with one arm at your side and placing your thumb or forefinger to your lips.


3. Tuning the Space

3A. Perform the Supreme Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram (microcosmic). Beginning in the east and turning clockwise, perform the following actions:

  1. To the east, Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Active Spirit in bright purple while vibrating AHIH (Eheieh).
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Air in yellow while vibrating YHVH (Yahweh). Be sure to pronounce this name rather than spelling it out as some schools teach. Pronouncing it is far more effective.
  4. Make the Sign of Air, holding both forearms upward and vertical at right angles to the shoulders and bending the wrists, as if holding up the sky above your head.
  1. Turn to the south. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Active Spirit in bright purple while vibrating AHIH (Eheieh).
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Fire in Red in yellow while vibrating ELOHIM.
  4. Make the Sign of Fire, forming an upright triangle with both hands and placing it at your forehead, palms facing outwards.
  1. Turn to the west. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Passive Spirit in deep purple while vibrating AGLA.
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Water in blue while vibrating AL.
  4. Make the Sign of Water, making a downward-pointing triangle with both hands and placing it at the level of the navel.
  1. Turn to the north. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Passive Spirit in deep purple while vibrating AGLA.
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Earth in green or black while vibrating ADNI (Adonai)
  4. Make the Sign of Earth, by taking a step forward and raising the right hand at and angle of 45 degrees to your body and dropping the left hand behind you at the same angle pointing downwards.

3B. Perform the Supreme Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram (macrocosmic). Beginning in the east and turning clockwise, perform the following actions:

  1. To the east, trace the Invoking Pentagram of Active Spirit in bright purple while vibrating AHIH (Eheieh).
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Fire in Red in yellow while vibrating ELOHIM.
  4. Make the Sign of Fire, forming an upright triangle with both hands and placing it at your forehead, palms facing outwards.

  1. Turn to the south. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Passive Spirit in deep purple while vibrating AGLA.
  2. Make the Sign of Rending the Veil, as if parting a heavy curtain in front of you with both hands.
  3. Trace the Invoking Pentagram of Earth in green or black while vibrating ADNI (Adonai)
  4. Make the Sign of Earth, by taking a step forward and raising the right hand at and angle of 45 degrees to your body and dropping the left hand behind you at the same angle pointing downwards.

Once you have returned to face the east, read or recite the Unity chapter from Liber 963:

1. O Thou Unity of all things: as the water that poureth through the fingers of my hand, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot hold Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I plunge into the heart of the ocean, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

2. O Thou Unity of all things: as the hot fire that flameth is too subtle to be held, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot grasp Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I hurl me down the scarlet throat of a volcano, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

3. O Thou Unity of all things: as the moon that waneth and increaseth in the heavens, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot stay Thee; for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I devour Thee, as a dragon devoureth a kid, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

4. O Thou Unity of all things: as the dust that danceth over the breast of the desert, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot seize Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I lick up with my tongue the bitter salt of the plains, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

5. O Thou Unity of all things: as the air that bubbleth from the dark depths of the waters, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot catch Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I net Thee as a goldfish in a kerchief of silk, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

6. O Thou Unity of all things: as the cloud that flitteth across the white horns of the moon, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot pierce Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I tangle Thee in a witch-gossamer of starlight, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

7. O Thou Unity of all things: as the star that travelleth along its appointed course, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot rule Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I hunt Thee across the blue heavens as a lost comet, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

8. O Thou Unity of all things: as the lightning that lurketh in the heart of the thunder, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot search Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I wed the flaming circle to the enshrouded square, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

9. O Thou Unity of all things: as the earth that holdeth all precious jewels in her heart, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot spoil Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I burrow as a mole in the mountain of Chaos, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

10. O Thou Unity of all things: as the pole-star that burneth in the centre of the night, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot hide Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I turn from Thee at each touch of the lodestone of lust, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

11. O Thou Unity of all things: as the blue smoke that whirleth up from the altar of life, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot find Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I inter Thee in the sarcophagi of the damned, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

12. O Thou Unity of all things: as a dark-eyed maiden decked in crimson and precious pearls, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot rob Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I strip Thee of Thy gold and scarlet raiment of Self, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

13. O Thou Unity of all things: as the sun that rolleth through the twelve mansions of the skies, so art Thou, O God my God. I cannot slay Thee, for Thou art everywhere; lo! though I lick up the Boundless Light, the Boundless, and the Not, there still shall I find Thee, Thou Unity of Unities, Thou Oneness, O Thou perfect Nothingness of Bliss!

The space should now be tuned for the conjuration.

4A. The Rite of Approach

Begin with the conjuration of the Archangel. Note that the godname s ADONAI MELEKH, not "Adonai Ha-Aretz" which is incorrect.

Oh Glorious and Mighty SANDALPHON, You who command and rule over the spirits of CHOLEM YESODOTH, Behold me, and in the name of the same your God ADONAI MELEKH, Attend and Appear before me within this circle of art! Full powers and wonders of the sephira of Malkuth do I rightly desire! Enlighten my understanding, encourage my heart, and manifest unto me now as I enter into and explore your spiritual realm.

At this point, vibrate the name SANDALPHON repeatedly until the Archangel and the spirits of Malkuth are perceived within the Table of Art. If this is being performed as a group ritual, with everyone chanting the name together, it is helpful for the officiant or scryer to have a bell chime that can be rung once he or she perceives a presence in whatever manner. At the bell chime, the chant stops.

Then sit down on a chair or cushion and read the Simple Pathworking Induction out loud. If you are able, it is helpful to record the induction so that you can listen to it and follow along with the corresponding visualizations. Or, if you are working with a group, each person can take a turn reading during a series of rites.

Sit or lie comfortably. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breath. Feel it flowing in and out of your body at its own natural rhythm. Relax your abdomen and allow it to expand as you breathe in, and contract as you breathe out. Feel the breath flowing, allowing it to sink into your abdomen and deepen at its own pace.

Visualize your body from the outside. Around it you see a glowing field of colored light arranged in four distinct layers. Bring your attention to the innermost layer, a field of light tinted with the rich green of earth. This layer extends only an inch or so beyond the boundary of your skin. As you bring your attention to this layer, relax from the toes on up. Then take a deep breath and say to yourself, “my body is at peace.” As deep relaxation flows throughout your body, see the field of green light becoming still and receptive.

Shift your attention to the next layer, a field of light tinted with the blue of water that covers earth. This layer begins where the green layer ends and extends a few more inches beyond your body. As you focus on this layer, pay attention to your emotions and feelings. Simply observe and let them pass, allowing your attention to detach from them. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, “my emotions are at peace.” As your emotions become calm and serene, see the field of blue light becoming still and reflective.

Shift your attention to the next layer, a field of light tinted with the yellow of air that covers water. This layer begins where the blue layer ends and extends yet a few more inches beyond your body. As you focus on this layer, pay attention to your thoughts. Simply observe and let them pass, allowing your attention to detach from them. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, “my thoughts are at peace.” As your thoughts become calm and clear, see the field of yellow light becoming still and integrated.

Shift your attention to the next layer, a field of light tinted with the red of fire that burns at the heart of the sun. This layer begins where the yellow layer ends and extends yet a few more inches beyond your body. As you focus on this layer, pay attention to the sparks of will that give rise to your individual sense of being. Simply observe and let them pass, allowing your attention to detach from them. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, “my will is at peace.” As your will becomes focused, see he field of red light becoming still and distinct.

Visualize your body and the aura that surrounds it. Allow any remaining tension, stress, or worry to drain away into the earth, and as you do, see the field of ethereal light that surrounds you becoming more vibrant and harmonious. Realize that you are now observing your body, emotions, thoughts, and will from outside, and that you are more than just these facets of your personality. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, “I am.” Then pay attention to your attention.

Now, begin to focus on your purpose in this temple. We are alone in the temple. The powers await just beyond our sensing. We will now bring these powers to life in our hall. Nothing awaits us or concerns us but the Great Work, which we shall now continue as we explore the realm of Sandalphon, the Archangel of Malkuth.

Visualize an idealized form of yourself taking shape out of the light in front of your inner vision. See your astral double standing, facing you. Take some time to get the best image possible fixed in your mind. Once you have this Body of Light complete, look around the temple space from the viewpoint of your double and notice first that you are surrounded by a blank gray fog.

As the fog clears, you begin to make out the astral form of this temple around you. To the east you notice a portal take shape out of the mist. This could be a doorway, a large magick mirror, a window, or some other kind of opening large enough for you to enter. You pass through this portal, and find yourself in the realm of Sandalphon. Take note of all you experience here as you explore the landscape of Malkuth.

At this point, allow 10-15 minutes for meditation in the spirit vision, or longer if it be your will. Use a timer, to remove the temptation to keep looking at your clock, watch, or phone. When you are finished, the induction is concluded as follows.

It is now time to leave the realm of Malkuth. Take a few moments to finish your exploration here, and then turn back the way you came.

When you arrive at the portal, pass back through into the astral region of the temple. Stand in front of your physical body, turn around, and allow the Body of Light to merge back into your physical body. Retain all that has happened in vivid presence, while you quietly remain for awhile, with eyes still closed.

As you slowly merge back into the physical, be aware of your breath flowing, gently in and out of your body. Feel your eyes still gently closed and relaxed. Feel the movement of your abdomen as it moves away from your body as you inhale and back towards your body as you exhale. Finally, be aware of your body and the space that your body occupies.

Slowly bring your hands up to your face, cover your eyes with your hands and then gently open your eyes. Remove your hands slowly from your face, slowly look up and come back to the present space in circle.

Once you are back, stand and return to your place at the altar. Skip to Point 5 to close the rite.

4B. The Elixir Rite

Begin with the conjuration of the Archangel:

Oh Glorious and Mighty SANDALPHON, You who command and rule over the spirits of CHOLEM YESODOTH, Behold me, and in the name of the same your God ADONAI MELEKH, Attend and Appear before me within this circle of art! Full powers and wonders of the sephira of Malkuth do I rightly desire! Enlighten my understanding, encourage my heart, and manifest unto me now as I partake of your spiritual realm.

At this point, vibrate the name SANDALPHON repeatedly until the presence of the Archangel and spirits of Malkuth is perceived within the Table of Art. If this is being performed as a group ritual, with everyone chanting the name together, it is helpful for the officiant or scryer to have a bell chime that can be rung once he or she perceives a presence in whatever manner. At the bell chime, the chant stops. Then say:

O all-encompassing ADONAI MELEKH. To thee we present this talisman of our magickal will! I ask thee, Oh Exalted One, to receive the body of this rite into the light of thy presence. As we proceed in making this Elixir of Malkuth, charging it with the creative energies of CHOLEM YESODOTH, we shall achieve a true alchemical ferment, mighty in Yetzirah and vitalized by thy blessing. In partaking of this Mystery, let there be unto us vitality of soul, increase of sight, true gnosis, and complete manifestation of the wonders of thy Sphere!

Note that the plural used here is NOT a typo or carry-over from the other elixir ritual. Even if you are working on your own, Sandalphon will also be partaking of the elixir in the form of an offering at the end of the rite. So there will always be at least two of you present.

Make one clockwise circumambulation, visualizing a wall of white light whirling rapidly in the same direction about the circle. When finished, the wall of light is allowed to fade. Hold the cup at heart level and say:

Creature of Wine who art established in the Sphere of Malkuth: by the vital force of my breath I enliven thee to perfect this work of Holy Magick in the realm of ADONAI MELEKH.

Once this is complete, join or clasp hands and make full ten circumambulations of the circle, corresponding to Malkuth.

Then raise power, visualizing a continuous spiral of white light ascending from the ground at feet, whirling clockwise around body and ascending until it disappears above head. Hold this visualization, and vibrate the divine name once: ADONAI MELEKH

The join or clasp hands and vibrate once more: ADONAI MELEKH

Extend hands toward elixir cup. Visualize beams of white light emanating from both hands and entering into the cup. When the cup feels “full” end the visualization, folding hands on breast left over right. Finally, trace the symbol of the elements, a circle divided into four equal sections, in a horizontal plane over the cup while vibrating once more: ADONAI MELEKH

Make one more complete circumambulation of the circle. Battery: 1 (that is, knock on the altar table). Raise the cup and say:

Behold the Elixir of Malkuth! For all and for each it is prepared! Let each and all receive its magick virtue!

Drink and then visualize or speak any practical intent. The cup should not be entirely drained. When finished, Battery: 1. Indicate the cup, which should still contain some of the elixir. Say:

Glorious and Mighty Sandalphon, we make this offering unto you, that it may nourish and fortify you as you attend to your appointed tasks. Be the ferment of our spiritual alchemy mighty in the crucible of our souls! So mote it be!

The offering should be allowed to evaporate following the rite. However, this is not necessary. If it has not fully evaporated after several days, you can pour it out at any convenient outdoor location.

5. The License to Depart

Archangel SANDALPHON and the spirits of Thy domain, because thou hast-diligently answered unto my demands, and hast been very ready and willing to come at my call, I do hereby license thee to depart unto thy proper place, without causing harm or danger unto man or beast. I charge thee to withdraw peaceably and quietly with the blessings of the great god ADONAI MELEKH, and that peace be ever continued between us. So mote it be!

7. Closing

The ritual should be closed with the Qabalistic Cross.

A couple of points: You will probably need to perform these rituals multiple times before you can consider yourself "initiated" into Malkuth. Generally speaking, this is something that the Archangel can bestow, but he won't necessarily do it the first time you ask. Or, maybe he will. It depends on his estimation of your state of awareness or realization. He may also give you specific instructions to follow in order to make yourself ready for the initiation. And they can always be performed afterwards, at any time, as rites of illumination.

Especially in the case of the Rite of Approach, be sure to write up a detailed journal entry including all that you experience. A voice recorder in the temple can be helpful for astral work of whatever kind so that you can describe what is going on as it happens. You may find trouble getting into the right mindspace to experience much the first time you do this and that's okay. Just use this trick: say to yourself "If I really was projecting into the astral, I would be seeing..."

You can test spirits you encounter by vibrating divine names at them. EHEIEH is a good general one, that dispels most false visions. You can also use the godname called upon in the ritual, ADONAI MELEKH. If you meet a spirit claiming to be Sandalphon vibrate his name at it. If it really is Sandalphon, the vision should intensify rather than weaken. Finally, obtain from the spirit a word of power, a number, or both.

After the ritual, go back and look those up in a resource like Sephir Sephiroth or Godwin's Cabalistic Encyclopedia to see if the number or the gematria of the word is appropriate to the element of Fire. If it is, you most likely found your way to the right place. On the other hand, if you can find no connection, it is advisable to perform the rite again at some point in the future, maybe after doing an Elixir Rite or two.

of course I include the taking of the elixir, i think that could be drawn in each quadrant the sigils of the name Divine and Arcangel eg the thing is that you direct all these powers to a target, then one can lean to work with the strength of an element (eg Earth for money, or planetary etc) what seems clear is that the action of the elemental energies is fast and concrete, are several experiences,it´s very important

I would also experiment with them for things like improving memory, healing, but also for things like improving the financial situation and love life. Although for the last two things I guess the elixir will only affect the individual drinking them and make them take action towards their goal...

the taking of the elixir is very very powerful, I have performed the initiation rite for the Earth, the appearance of the spirit has been very fast, what is clear is that to create manifestations on the physical plane, rituals have to be repeated because sometimes that something comes down to Malkuth is not easy, I think that sometimes even if you started with Jupiter and even you have to change and work with other energies, you have to be very attentive to the sensations, the signals without obsessing clear.

on the other hand for the great ritual of the pentagram with the 4 elements the King himself gave me information on how he could do it, with some changes, but I repeat the magic elixir binds you very powerfully to the target as well as the forces involved in Operation

Thelemapedia gives YHShVH as a godname for Spirit, both Active and Passive -

31-bis (Spirit): (יהשוה (אהיה : אגלא – YHShVH (AHIH : AGLA) (Yeheshua [Ehieh:A.G.L.A.])

Can it be used instead of AHIH and AGLA for both the Active and Passive Spirit forms of the Pentagram? Have you tried it?

I would think so, but I have not tried it myself. It is possible that there might be an issue with the lack of distinction between Active and Passive since YHShVH is spirit in general (in fact, it's the Tetragrammaton YHVH infused with Spirit - Shin) but without testing I can't say for sure.

I've just looked over Liber 777 in hermetic.com and the names for spirit under godnames in Assiah are indeed written (in Hebrew letters): YHShVH [AHIH : AGLA]. So I'm deducing YHShVH ought to be spoken before each of the two other names. Imma do that in my next ritual with elements and see how it goes.

I would not read it that way - when you see multiple listings like that in 777 it does not mean you are supposed to use them all. That notation indicates YHShVH is one way to do it, with AHIH : AGLA being the other.

Since I'm not a certain big name Solomonic literalist, though, I'm not going to tell you it's necessarily *wrong* ;). Feel free to experiment and get back to me. What I usually find, though, is that while adding more names with the same attribution doesn't hurt, it doesn't usually help either.

@Scott, I was wondering whether it would not make more sense to incorporate the two GIRPs between the LBRP and the LIRH? As there would surely be a smoother build up to the LIRH, which would be preceded by the macrocosmic GIRP, as the LIRH is surely a stronger macrocosmic invocation, because of its inherent use of hexagrams?

Before I answer that I want to point out that you should feel free to experiment. Try it. See if it works better. If it does, keep doing it.

But here's why I don't do it that way. The "Lesser" rituals really should be called General or Foundational. They are used to set up the field or space in which you will be working magick.

The "Greater" rituals really should be called Specific or something similar. All of the Greater rituals work with a specific force or aspect, and serve to "tune" the space created by the two "Lesser" rituals to the specific aspect you are working with. This is even true with the version of the GRP that includes all four elements - it is attributed to the specific aspect of Malkuth.

There is in fact no hierarchy from Lesser to Greater to Supreme or whatever. The Supreme Pentagram might be an enhanced Greater Pentagram, but the Greater Pentagrm is iin no way an enhanced Lesser Pentagram. The two rituals, despite their superficial similarities, do entirely different things.

My opinion is that if you do the Greater Pentagram following the Lesser Pentagram, what you are going to get is the microcosmic aspect of whatever force you are trying to work with. Tuning the space before the LRH means that only force to which the space is tuned is going to resonate with the LRH, even though it's a general ritual.

I can maybe see some possible applications for that, but it probably isn't what you want and wouldn't be appropriate to a Malkuth initiation. Because of how these rituals work, you need to get in touch with the macrocosmic spirits that can effectively initiate. Your own mental projections (that is, the microcosmic aspects of the spirits) are far less efficacious in that regard.

Hi Scott. Just wondering how long do you suggest we stay at each Sephiroth after initiation?

For the elements I've been doing 5 weeks per element (First week initiation, other 4 weeks normal daily practice). Do you think a similar amount of time at Malkuth would be good before onto Yesod for example?

I think that can vary, depending on when you feel ready to move on. The point of doing the "spirit vision" portion of the process is to interact with the spirits, and they should be able to tell you when you are ready if you are not sure. I would think, though, that the timeframe you lay out here should be sufficient. You might be able to get through them faster, but that depends a lot on your personal progress on the path.

So short answer - if that's the amount of time you want to spend between sephiroth, it should be fine for you to do it that way.

Can Sandalphon alone be asked for jobs in her capacity as ruler of Malkuth? Do you know anyone who has done that? She's a sephirotic angel, and should at least be somewhat powerful in that regard. Agrippa names Uriel as archangel of Earth (path) but Malkuth (all 4 elements) makes a bit more sense to me. Neither has any lore or magickal history.

Yes, I can certainly let you know, but how can I know that it was Sandalphon who helped me land the job if there are already other angels assigned to the task? Is there a way to fine-tune the charge so that I can personally know if it was Sandalphon who did it?

If you have a bunch of operations going on it probably is not practical to tease out which one resulted in a success. Probably the answer is that they all did, and working out the portion of that effect each one contributed.

Some people do try to craft charges requesting some sort of sign in addition to what they actually want accomplished, but generally I don't recommend doing that under most circumstances. The reason is that if the total probability shift your operation produces is X, and the probability shift required by the sign is Y, the probability shift that gets applied to what you actually want to happen will always be X - Y, which is always less than X. So to get the best possible result, you should use a charge that directs the full power of your operation at your goal.

I was thinking of assigning Sandalphon to target a specific company, which would mitigate all doubt because if it happens, it would be 100% attributed to Sandalphon. However, I realize this is a poor charge because it excludes all other potential companies. Perhaps I should start with something smaller, like many magicians do, such as something close to Malkuth and Earth's sphere of influence.

If you do have a single operation set up like that you would be able to tell. It really is a question of how much you want a job that fits your requirements versus how much experimentation you want to do. If your goal is to demonstrate whether or not a particular spirit can do something, then you're good. But it also means that you might wind up less likely to get the job you are aiming for. It's all a tradeoff based on your goals.

Yes, it's a trade off. On one hand you get to see how effective the spirit is. We always talk about methods but never the spirits contacted through those methods and since it is clear that all sephirotic angels have an Assiah side, Sandalphon should be able to do practical work or at least connect you to one. Plus I don't have a lot of work for a spirit of Malkuth, probably best to put these guys to work.

This is how an author recommends to start with a specific spirit he wrote a book after, to start small and easy goals to bigger goals. He also said the same thing as you, that this how relationships are built.

What do you think of this? For conjuration, a sigil on the table of art is required. As mentioned in this article, I drafted it on the lunar kamea and it looks fine and as for the Malkuth field setting, the Golden Dawn recommended using the greater lunar hexagram for it which coincides with drawing her sigil on the lunar kamea. However, I am unsure about the hexagram colors and the symbol that goes in the middle of the hexagram representing Malkuth. GD didn't specify. But I think drawing the Lunar hexagram but using a symbol representing Maluth instead of the moon makes sense, like the quartered circle symbol and that's what I'm going with for now, using the godname Adonai Melech.

I am of course going to experiment with your tried and tested method of Supreme ritual of pentagram for both microcosmic and macrocosmic field and will let you know how they went.

In the Thelemic system there is no hexagram representing Malkuth. The ceremonial form for Malkuth is the version of the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram that includes all four elements. I can't speak for what Golden Dawn folks might suggest. The Thelemic and GD systems are similar but not the same, and I'm not a GD initiate.

Also, I use the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram only. The Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram is a Golden Dawn Enochian ritual that I do not personally use for any of my operations.

Though for now I've already chosen the GIRH of Moon version for Sandalphon and have been doing so since this conversation started. I will experiment with our Augoides Malkuth ritual once that's over.

Also, I have a question for you. You once told me that to know which spirits roam our neighbourhood, a pathworking into Malkuth will have to be performed and the spirits commanded to appear. Does this also apply for say, the spirit set over an organization we wish to contact for example Microsoft?

If you want to use a hexagram instead of pentagrams, the Moon would be the best choice.

As for your question, I'm not sure one way or the other. You might just have to test it. An organization is more abstract than the land around your neighborhood, and I would probably classify organizations as belonging to Yetzirah rather than Assiah for that reason. That might or might not affect how you would want to work with the corresponding spirits - I can't say for sure either way.

In my daily magic routine I include the usual microcosmic GIRP after the operant field and now I'm wondering whether to follow the microcosmic with this macrocosmic version, or is it just to be used in this specific malkuth initiation?

I have only used in it in this context, but you certainly can experiment with it elsewhere if you want.

I wouldn't recommend trying to do both together, though. Pick one or the other.

2nd, what has been your experience with Saints?

When giving time limits on our charges, how does this apply to zodiacal angels who work over months?

I would set up an operant field, at least for practical work. Opening Malkuth is for obtaining the HGA vision, and the other sephiroth match visions related to specific states of consciousness. You don't need to open sephiroth for practical work - they correspond to states of consciousness.

I don't have a lot of experience working with saints. I've worked with the archangels a lot and sometimes they get lumped in with the saints, like "Saint Michael," but I expect working with human saints would be different.

How it applies is that you will get the best results with zodiacal work if you use longer time limits. If you need something faster, use planets or elements.

I am assuming that you mean unicursal hexagrams, since the pentagram is already unicursal. If so, I agree that you should be able to use the elemental versions of the unicursal hexagram in place of the elemental pentagrams in the GRP, and I would expect it to work.

If you already are opening with the LRP and LRH, you have set the scope of your operation to macrocosmic. In that context, the pentagrams in the GRP act as macrocosmic figures. So while I don't know that the unicursal hexagram would be an improvement, I expect that it would work fine if you want to use it in their place.
